Node.js — Retrieve the List of Supported Hash Algorithms

Node.js bundles an OpenSSL version. For example, Node.js v16 ships with OpenSSL 1.1.1. Node.js uses OpenSSL for cryptographic operations which includes everything hash-related.

This tutorial shows you how to retrieve the list of supported hash algorithms in your Node.js release.

Get Supported Hash Algorithms in Node.js

Retrieve the list of supported hash algorithms in your Node.js version using the crypto.getHashes() method. This method returns a list of strings identifying the individual algorithms, like md5, sha256, sha3-256, and so on:

import crypto from 'node:crypto'

const supportedHashAlgorithms = crypto.getHashes()

// ['RSA-MD5', 'RSA-SHA256', 'sha1', 'sha256', 'sha3-256', … <many more>]

Please notice that we shortened the sample list of hashing algorithms to more known ones.

We printed the list of hashing algorithms using:

  • Node.js v16.16
  • with OpenSSL 1.1.1.
